Cart abandonment: when size doubt drives your customers away.

A basket held up by size doubt, with checkout left inactive

Baymard Institute measures around 70% cart abandonment on average in e-commerce, and identifies surprise fees discovered at checkout as the leading cause of abandonment. Those causes are known and are treated with known methods.

But online fashion adds a cause of its own: an unanswered doubt, “what if it doesn't fit?” That doubt is not fixed by a promo code or a follow-up e-mail, it is fixed at the source.

The exact moment you lose the customer

Follow the journey: the customer likes the product, opens the page, looks at the photos… then reaches the size selector. If they don't know what to pick, two outcomes: they add to cart “for later” (and the cart sleeps) or they leave the page to look for a certainty they won't find elsewhere.

The abandoned cart is often just the visible symptom of a hesitation born much earlier, in front of the size question.

The signals of doubt

You can see them in journeys: back-and-forth between the page and the size chart, hesitation between two sizes added then removed, a detour through reviews hunting for a “runs small”… All moments where the customer looks for a personal answer the page doesn't give.

These signals stack on top of the classic causes Baymard Institute documents across all sectors: surprise fees at checkout (the leading cause of abandonment), mandatory account creation, an overlong funnel. Fashion accumulates them, then adds size uncertainty.

Answer the doubt where it is born

The answer must live on the product page, not in an e-mail the next day. Two levers address it: seeing the garment worn on yourself, and knowing which size to order for that specific product, with a fit description. Treated there, at the moment of hesitation, doubt never gets time to settle.

A concrete example

A customer wants jeans. She hesitates between 38 and 40, the last pair ordered online was too tight. Without an answer, she'll “think about it”. With try-on and recommendation: she sees the jeans on her 3D digital twin, reads that the 40 will fall straight on the hips, orders the 40. The sale happens now, not “maybe later”.

Follow-up e-mails still help, but they come after

Abandoned-cart e-mails recover part of the sales, and you should keep them. But they treat the symptom: the customer already left, doubt intact. Removing the doubt on the product page acts before, where the room for improvement is largest.

How OptiDress addresses this

OptiDress acts on the cause specific to fashion, on the product page: the visitor creates their 3D digital twin from their physical characteristics, without uploading any photo, sees the garment worn on them and receives the size to order with a fit description (OptiSize). The avatar is kept for 30 days on the store: a visitor returning to complete their order finds their profile again.

Integration is performed by the OptiDress team in under 24 hours on your existing store, with no redesign, with a subscription based on the number of monthly visitors, no commitment. The generic causes of abandonment (surprise fees, mandatory account, long funnel) remain yours to handle in your checkout.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

Aren't follow-up e-mails enough?

They recover part of the carts, but only act after the customer left, without removing the doubt that caused the abandonment. At around 70% average abandonment measured by Baymard Institute, treating the cause on the product page beats catching the consequences.

Would a reassurance pop-up do the job?

Generic reassurance (“easy returns”, “money back”) helps, but doesn't answer the customer's personal question: “what about on me?”. That answer is what unlocks the decision.

How can I test the effect on my store?

Try the full journey on the Maison Léon demo store, then book a demo: we project it onto your products, and integration takes under 24 hours.
