Most virtual try-on tools start with the same request: upload a photo of yourself. It seems like a small ask. In practice it's the point where a share of your traffic stops, and the reason those tools can't tell a shopper which size to order. Asking someone to photograph themselves mid-purchase is a different kind of request from asking for their size. According to surveys cited by virtual try-on vendor WearMind, 42% of users hesitate to share photos with try-on tools. Those shoppers don't complain: they simply close the widget and go back to guessing between two sizes, which is exactly the behaviour the tool was installed to fix.

A photo carries no measurements

This is the structural limit, and it's the one most comparisons miss. An image shows what a garment looks like on a body. It contains no height, no weight, no chest or waist measurement. So a photo-based tool can render a convincing image and still be unable to answer the question that drives most apparel returns: which size should I order? That's why photo-based apps display your existing size chart next to the render rather than computing a size for the individual shopper.

Privacy is a real objection, not a theoretical one

A photo of a person is personal data, and in Europe a body image sits close to categories that legal teams treat carefully. Vendors handle this by deleting images after processing: WearMind states input photos are deleted from its servers immediately after the result is generated, Genlook deletes after seven days. That mitigates the risk. It doesn't remove the friction for the shopper who was never going to upload anything in the first place.

Instead of an image, the shopper enters what they know about their own body: height, weight, body shape, and optionally their measurements. From that data a 3D body model is generated, and garments are rendered onto it.

The trade-off is honest and worth stating: entering three or four fields takes longer than uploading a photo, and the first render isn't instant. What you get in exchange is a profile that works for shoppers who would never have used the tool otherwise, and, because the system now holds real body data, the ability to compute a size recommendation per product rather than displaying a generic chart.

No photo because the shopper isn't shown at all

Is photo-free try-on less accurate?

For appearance, a photo-based render can look more photorealistic since it starts from a real image.
